If you've looked through the site you've probably seen this mentioned quite a lot. That's because it's important, xhtml & CSS are the main languages in any website.
Without them your site would be nothing but text and with them you can display images, videos and of course add color & style to your website. Valid code offers some great advantages such as better cross browser compatibility and organized code.
